Summary:
Sheriff Charlie Gum was shot and killed after he and a deputy responded to a dance hall to investigate reports of a man causing a disturbance.
The suspect stated that if any deputies showed up he would shoot them.
When the sheriff and the deputy arrived, they exchanged gunfire with the man and the subject was killed. However, the subject's son opened fire, killing Sheriff Gum.
Sheriff Gum had served with the Bath County Sheriff's Office for 27 years. He was survived by his wife and four children.
