Summary: |
Officer Joseph Brassard Sr., died of a heart attack shortly after ending his shift on June 17, 1972. He had been kicked in the chest earlier while handling a call involving a disorderly, drug-enraged suspect.
Brassard responded to the Parkview Tavern, located on Fifth Street between Congress and Ferry streets, and helped his fellow officers arrest a disorderly male who was apparently under the influence of narcotics, Police records reveal. Reports say that a vicious scuffle unfolded and Brassard was kicked in the chest by the subject. He later said he was feeling ill but he completed his shift and went home.
Within 15 minutes of arriving at his house, the 38-year-old collapsed at his kitchen table. He was pronounced deceased at Samaritan Hospital. His autopsy showed that he suffered a fatal heart attack.

Disposition: |
Sadly, it wasn't until some 50 years later that Officer Brassard was remembered and added to the New York State Fallen Officers Memorial, in Albany.
His own Troy Police Dept had forgotten him!
Officer Brassard's step-son, Dan Sullivan, had to provide proof to officials at Troy PD, who only then contacted other retired officers who worked with Brassard and also verified his sacrifice, says Katie Nowak of 'The Record'.
In 2011, Brassard was ceremoniously added the the Memorial!
Thank you Dan Sullivan.
(ed. note) While the Troy PD has a website, they have no memorial pages for their own Fallen Heroes! |
