Summary: |
Deputy Commander Patrick Carothers was shot and killed as he and other members of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force attempted to serve a warrant on a subject in Long County, Georgia.
======================================================================
Multiple law enforcement agencies had been on the lookout for 25-year-old Dontrel Carter since September. Carter was wanted for attempted murder of law enforcement officers and evading authorities. His original charges stemmed from an incident in South Carolina where he fired into a family members home, led police on a high speed chase, and eventually fired at police officers before escaping capture. A $7,500 reward was offered for information leading to his arrest.
U.S. Deputy Commander Patrick Carothers, 53, and his team of Deputy Marshals tracked this violent criminal to a single wide trailer at the 11800 block of Tibit Drive, in a mobile home park near Ludowici, Long County, Georgia. As officers breached the trailer, Carter opened fire on them, striking Carothers several times. Medics performed emergency first aid, but Carothers succumbed to his injuries at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah.
His team returned fire, killing Carter.
